On Thursday, November 3rd, Councilman James held a public forum at the Old Louisville Information Center in Central Park to present the blueprint for streetscape renovations in the Oak Street Corridor and seek feedback from local residents and businesses. |
“Holding a public forum on these streetscape improvements was a necessary step to take to ensure that everyone’s opinions and concerns are heard,” said the Councilman. “I am very pleased at the support we received and the Oak Street Task Force and I will continue working with the project developer, local businesses, and Old Louisville residents to ensure that this vision of a vibrant historic corridor is realized in the near future.” The project blueprint and other information about the Oak Street Task Force is available on Councilman James’ Metro website. The inaugural “Light Up California” celebration, sponsored by Councilman James, will take place on Saturday, December 3rd, from 5:30-7:30pm at California Leisure Park. Councilman James will be joined by Mayor Greg Fischer and other city officials, as they enjoy the holiday season with the residents and leaders of the historic California neighborhood. Snacks and refreshments will be offered in addition to musical performances by the First Gethsemane Church Choir and the River City Drum Corps. If you have any questions about this event, please contact our office at 574-1106.

This week’s District Six Spotlight is on Kentucky Shakespeare, one of the true jewels of our community. Kentucky Shakespeare, which now presents the oldest free festival in the entire country, has spent the last fifty-two years working tirelessly to achieve its mission of using “the works of Shakespeare to enrich the community through accessible, professional theatre experiences that educate, inspire and entertain people of all ages”. Anyone who has experienced one of their famous free productions in Central Park can attest to the organization’s unwavering commitment to artistic quality.
Last month, Councilman James teamed up with Kentucky Shakespeare to organize the first-ever “Saturday in the Park” celebration, which featured live music, refreshments, movies, and other family-friendly entertainment. We look forward to working with Kentucky Shakespeare for many years to come and thank them for their continued commitment to excellence in the Sixth District. For more information about KY Shakespeare and upcoming events, visit their website here. In late October, the Metro Council unanimously approved new boundaries for all 26 Metro Council Districts. Redistricting is required every 10 years after the census data is released to ensure every district is evenly represented. District 6 now includes all of Old Louisville, a majority of the California neighborhood along with portions of the Taylor-Berry neighborhood.
The new District boundaries can be viewed here. If you don’t know what precinct you live in, please visit the MapIt feature on our website, http://mapit.louisvilleky.gov/, and enter your address. Your voting precinct will show up under the Political Information tab. For any further inquiries about this process, please contact our office at 574-1106. On Saturday, October 29th, residents of Floral Terrace and the surrounding neighborhood took time out of their Halloween weekend to join Councilman James and his wife Michelle at a backyard “Dish with David”. Councilman James had the opportunity to visit with his neighbors and discuss the pressing issues that affect both Floral Terrace and the larger community. Special thanks go to Mark and Claudette Rego for hosting the event at her beautiful residence.

As sports fans around the Sixth District may already know, our own DuPont Manual Lady Crimsons beat the odds and made history two weeks ago with their state championship victory in field hockey over Sacred Heart. Representatives from the team attended last Thursday’s council meeting to receive a proclamation from Councilman James and be recognized by the Metro Council.
Read more about the game in the transcript of Councilman James’ words below:
“On Tuesday, October 27th, the DuPont Manual Girls Varsity Field Hockey Team became the only public high school team to reach the finals of the State tournament in the last six years. A few hours later, they made history again by becoming DuPont Manual’s first ever State Championship field hockey team.
With the help of two second-half goals by Anna Dufour, the Lady Crimsons were able to defeat the defending state champions of Sacred Heart Academy, a team that at that time had lost only four games in the last five years. Their hard-fought 2-1 victory brought the Crimson’s overall season record to an all-time best of 25-5-1 as well as four First-Team All State recognitions and hopefully a new dynasty in the making.
I would like to congratulate their team and the DuPont Manual athletic program for this impressive achievement and I look forward to building a field hockey dynasty here in the Sixth District.”
Last week, Councilman James attended a pep rally at DuPont Manual to present the field hockey team with an award on behalf of the Council and Mayor’s Office (above). Click on the Facebook icon at the bottom of this newsletter to follow Councilman James’ new Facebook page
