Plan for short delays on U.S. 31 near State Road 28 this week
Drivers on northbound and southbound U.S. 31 near State Road 28 may experience intermittent, short-term traffic restrictions and brief delays during daylight hours Wednesday through Friday as crews mobilize equipment for construction of a new bridge pier in the highway median.
Rieth-Riley Construction Company has started construction of a new bridge that will carry State Road 28 over U.S. 31 at the new interchange being built near Tipton. Motorists may encounter slow or stopped traffic as cranes and other equipment are moved from the shoulders to the median.
Crews are driving steel piles to provide foundational support for the new bridge's abutments and center pier. People in the area may hear recurring loud impact noises as the pile driving equipment pounds the long beams deep into the ground.
Rieth-Riley Construction, INDOT's contractor for the $10.8
million interchange project, is currently building up earth embankments for the
new interchange ramps and bridge approaches. Motorists in the area should be alert for flaggers controlling traffic on State Road 28 and abide by reduced speed limits through the work zone.
State Road 28 closure
State Road 28 at U.S. 31 is tentatively scheduled to close for up to 120
days beginning in mid-June. A specific date will be announced in the near
future.
During the closure of State Road 28, a signed detour will direct
highway traffic north to State Road 26 via State Road 29 and State Road 19.
Local motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and seek their best
alternate routes. To see a map of state highway work zones and road
closures, go to indot.carsprogram.org.
At the same time as the State Road 28 closure, U.S. 31 will be
reduced to one lane in each direction and direct access to and from State Road
28 will be unavailable.
All new traffic configurations, including the new roundabout
interchange and State Road 28 access bridged over U.S. 31, are expected to open
in November.
