Evanston Volunteer Recognition Reception

Evanston is known for being a city with many people who give back to their community by volunteering at many different service organizations. Those who volunteer range in age from the young to the most senior. This tradition has been acknowledged and recognized in a variety of ways over the years. There have been citywide receptions and recognition of individuals by the City Council. The next recognition is an annual reception which is being planned and carried out by a joint committee from the Evanston Community Foundation, Evanston Township High School and Northwestern University. The reception will be held during this month, April,  in which volunteers are recognized across the nation.

This year, the reception will take place in the McCormick Tribune Center on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 6pm.  For more information or to R.S.V.P., please click here>>>

On our way to 150,000 hours!

Volunteer Evanston continues to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Evanston’s founding and many community organizations are stepping up to help us reach our 150,000 hour goal.  These efforts, along with the hard work of all our volunteering community members, are proving that Evanston is a city with an ever-growing spirit of volunteerism. Evanston agencies and volunteers have logged almost 58,000 hours!

In honor of National Volunteer Month, let’s take a look at some of the notable volunteering that has recently occurred in the community.

Northwestern University Dance Marathon danced its way to 40,020 hours, making them the largest contributor thus far!

Community Animal Rescue Effor (C.A.R.E.)featured in our last edition of Volunteer News, has recently logged over 2,200 hours.  Their organization has been an integral part in the drive for 150,000 hours.

The American Cancer Society logged 2,000 hours!

Omega Delta Phi logged 321 hours from January to March and over 350 hours during the Cesar Chavez Day of Service.

Evanston Township High School has stepped up with 531 hours of service. Thank you, Wildkits!

Northwestern Athletics has contributed over 500 hours towards our goal.  It has been unbelievable to see student athletes making a difference in the community on and off the field!  Go, 'Cats!

If you are inspired by the hard work of your fellow community members, please search for a volunteer opportunity that suits you at www.volunteerevanston.org.

Together we will "Be the Change"!

Volunteer Spotlight

Valeree Haas

This month’s Volunteer Spotlight highlights the exemplary dedication of Valeree Haas to the community and the City of Evanston.

Valeree is an Evanstonian to the very core.  She still resides in her childhood home and is proud to speak of her high school days at ETHS. Valeree has held all kinds of jobs, most recently at a Chicago law firm and the Law Department at the City of Evanston. Valeree took a short hiatus from the city job, but knowing the deep love she has for her hometown, it is no wonder that she decided to come back to volunteer at the city.

In early 2011, Valeree began volunteering at the City of Evanston focusing on rental registrations.  She volunteers 5-6 hours daily performing various administrative tasks, such as cleaning up the database, verifying paper trails and researching building owners.  Valeree takes pride in being well-versed in many areas, which affords her the ability to help on many multi-faceted tasks and projects.  While rental registration takes up the bulk of her time, Valeree is always willing to lend a helping hand to her peers.

Valeree has numerous strengths which make her an ideal volunteer.  Her attention to detail and organization skills have been a huge asset to the city.  When speaking to Valeree, you immediately notice dedication and passion in all she does.  Valeree’s vibrant personality and enthusiastic commitment make her a clear choice for this month’s volunteer spotlight. She is no doubt a role model and a cherished member of the Evanston community. On behalf of the City of Evanston and the entire community, we send our deepest congratulations and many thanks to Valeree Haas.

Visit www.volunteerevanston.org to follow Valaree’s lead and “Be the Change” in Evanston. If you know an outstanding volunteer we should spotlight, please email us their information at volunteer@volunteerevanston.org
