Up in the Tufts of a Truffula Tree: An Outdoor Dr. Seuss Spectacular!
Join us for this free family event to celebrate sunshine, nature, and community through some of Dr. Seuss's greatest stories, including Yertle the Turtle, The Sneetches, and The Lorax! An ensemble of Northwestern University students has been working all spring to bring these stories to life through original music, movement, and storytelling. Following the show, stay for some kid friendly activities including bubbles, planting seeds, and more! Presented by Spectrum Theatre Company in collaboration with Purple Crayon Players.  Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl and Alderman Ann Rainey (8th Ward) publically thanked Best Buy on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 for their generous donation of about $10,000 worth of appliances for the City of Evanston’s redevelopment project at 631 Howard St. The media availability was held at Best Buy’s Evanston location at 2301 Howard St.
“I am especially pleased to be thanking the Evanston Best Buy for this wonderful donation – this is the second piece of great news about this store in less than two months,” said Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl. “First, we were thrilled to learn that this Best Buy was not among the store closures that were announced in April. And now, the same store is donating appliances for our affordable housing units on Howard Street.” More>>>

 On June 14, 2012, the City of Evanston will host a Neighborhood Stabilization Program 2 (NSP2) Open House at 1733 Leland Avenue in Evanston. Members of the community are invited to attend to learn about the program, marketed as LiveEvanston, and meet local contractors involved in the rehabilitation of these foreclosed homes. U.S. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl and Alderman Delores Holmes (5th Ward) will be on hand to kick off the open house and discuss the successes of this initiative. ECTV Channel 16 will temporarily be off-air and off line to accommodate the moving of its operations from its current location on Hatrey Ave. to the City of Evanston's Service Center. The station is expected to be back up and airing between Friday, June 1 and Sunday, June 3, 2012. Any government meeting held in the meantime will be taped and available for replay on the City of Evanston's YouTube Channel here>>>. The station is expected to broadcast the next scheduled City Council meeting on Monday, June 11, 2012. ECTV staff and the city apologize for any inconvenience during this process.

 An excited crowd joined the Evanston Public Library staff in meeting, naming and banding the newest peregrine falcons on Thursday, May 31st. For the last seven years, the same pair (Nona and Squawker) has nested at the Library. The event attracted over sixty people, from toddlers to seniors, many of whom smiled and cooed when the Falcon babies, called eyases (EYE-ah-sez), were unveiled by trained scientists. More>>>

 School’s almost out for summer, and kids in Evanston may actually look forward to their next encounter with the “heat” this summer, thanks to 7-Eleven® stores’ popular Operation Chill program that rewards positive behavior with a very cool treat. Through Operation Chill®, law enforcement officers from participating local police and sheriff’s departments can “ticket” youngsters caught in the act of doing good with Slurpee® beverage coupons. Appropriate “actions” might include helping another person, deterring crime or participating in a positive activity in the community.  EPL Latin@ presents “Summer Kickoff Open House” at the Main Library (1703 Orrington) on Saturday, June 9 from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in the Community Meeting Room on the first floor. This bilingual event will feature speakers from various Evanston organizations who will give brief presentations regarding fun opportunities happening this summer, especially events that may be of interest to Latin@ youth, adults, and families. "To have such a great weekend and have executed our game plan and done so well all over the field, I'm just really proud of what these girls have done," said Head Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller, who has now been part of nine NCAA championships in her playing and coaching career. "As a coach, you can try to encourage and inspire, but it's the girls that do it on the field, and they were determined and they were really on a mission."
