DEP TO HOST AMMUNITION COLLECTION EVENT IN TALLAHASSEE

~Proper disposal of old or unwanted ammunition protects natural resources~

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection will co-sponsor an Ammunition Collection Event in Tallahassee this Saturday, Dec. 1. This is the eighth year the Department has partnered with the Southern Waste Information eXchange, Inc. for this event. Other sponsors include Kevin’s Guns and Sporting Goods and the State of Florida Fire Marshal’s Office.

This is an opportunity to safely remove potentially dangerous ammunition from homes so it won’t end up in Florida landfills. Lead comprises 92 to 98 percent of the weight of most bullets and shot. Properly disposing of old or unwanted ammunition can save lives by preventing it from getting into the hands of young children, and can also help protect the environment by keeping lead and other contaminants from seeping into the groundwater.

Items that will be collected include: shotgun shells, rifle cartridges, pistol cartridges, black powder, smokeless powder, roadside flares, boating flares and fireworks.

The event will take place:

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 1
