FLORIDA PARK SERVICE TO HOST GROUNDBREAKING EVENT FOR DUNNELLON TRAIL

This section Cross Florida Greenway leads to the Withlacoochee River and is part of the trail and bridge project in Dunnellon.

 

MARION COUNTY – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Park Service will host a groundbreaking event to celebrate the start of construction of a multi-use trail and bridge in Dunnellon.

This new trail and bridge brings the state one step closer to connecting the Withlacoochee State Trail to the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway -- a key component of a multi-county regional greenway loop, which is part of the larger Florida Greenways and Trails System. Connected trails attract tourists, increase property values, provide healthy recreation, improve the quality of life, stimulate business development and provide alternative transportation in local communities.

The 280-foot bridge will span the Withlacoochee River. The 12-foot wide, 3-mile paved trail will feature two trailheads -- one trailhead located in Citrus County and one in Marion County. The construction is made possible with funding from the Florida Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration through a Transportation Enhancement Project and 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant.

Directions:

From I-75, exit onto SR 40 in Ocala heading west to Dunnellon. SR 40 ends

at US 41. Turn left and proceed south on US 41 through Dunnellon over

the Withlacoochee River. Continue south on US 41 for 1.2 miles to CR 39.

Turn left onto CR 39. Event signage and parking will be visible 400’ after turning off of US 41.
