FLORIDA STATE PARKS TO HOST NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY EVENTS

~Cleanup projects aim to recruit and highlight volunteers to improve the lands and facilities the public uses for recreation, education, exercise and connecting with nature. ~

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is just one of the many state parks hosting National Public Lands Day events on Sept. 29.

TALLAHASSEE Join the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Park Service and the Friends of Florida State Parks, Inc. to celebrate 2012 National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 29. Nearly 50 state parks are hosting events where volunteers can join in the special programs and efforts to keep our natural areas and cultural resources healthy and clean. This year’s events are focused on supporting Florida’s public lands, encouraging citizens to spend more time outdoors and visiting state parks to enjoy a more healthy and active life style. The Friends of Florida State Parks, Inc has been working with local Friends & Alliance groups to promote this special day and to encourage participation.
Volunteers are critical to the Florida Park Service and helping provide high-quality nature based recreation to the more than 24 million visitors each year. In fact, in fiscal 2011, more than 27,300 Florida Park Service volunteers donated nearly 1.4 million hours, a value of nearly $28 million. Volunteers provide important services such as administration, tour guides, event coordination, maintenance and a large variety of necessary tasks for the parks.
“Volunteering at a state park on National Public Lands Day is a great way to get involved in protecting and preserving your local environment,” said Florida Park Service Director Donald Forgione. “Our state parks offer many opportunities to do what you love, while enjoying Florida’s natural resources and have your time make a difference in your community.”
