Pre-bidders Grant Orientation Meeting
On Wednesday, April 9 2014 the Office of African Affairs held its Pre-bidders Grant Orientation meeting for the FY14 African Community Grant. About 70 participants, mostly community- and faith-based organization representatives, attended the informational session on eligibility criteria and funding priorities. The meeting took place at Edna Cromwell Community room at the Franklin D, Reeves Center of Municipal Affairs.

FY14 African Community Grant | Request For Applications (RFA)
The African Community Grant is intended to fund community-based organizations whose programs provide culturally and linguistically targeted services and resources to the District’s African residents and businesses. These programs should reflect the Mayor’s top priority areas, and the documented needs and priorities of the District’s African constituency.

Mayor Gray Appoints Kristy M. Greenwalt Executive Director of the Interagency Council on Homelessness
Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced today that he has selected Kristy M. Greenwalt to serve as the Executive Director of the Interagency Council on Homelessness (ICH). Ms. Greenwalt was selected after an exhaustive national search and will officially start the new position on April 28. “Kristy Greenwalt brings over 15 years of experience in housing policy and community development to our efforts to end homelessness in the District,” said Mayor Gray. “We have found a transformative leader with a strong understanding of the regulatory, local and national variables that contribute to successful outcomes for vulnerable populations.”

Effort Is 6th Annual Campaign to Expedite Pothole Repairs across the District; Residents and Commuters Encouraged to Report Pothole Locations
Mayor Vincent C. Gray and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Terry Bellamy today launched the District’s sixth annual Potholepalooza campaign to expedite pothole repairs on roadways across the city. The Mayor and Bellamy helped fill potholes near the intersection of G Street and Benning Road SE to usher in DDOT’s month-long campaign for aggressively repairing potholes caused by winter weather.

Mayor Gray Submits Fiscal Year 2015 Budget to Council
Budget Makes Historic Investment in Public Education, Builds on Previous Investment in Affordable Housing, and Provides Funds to Begin Construction of New Hospital for East End
Mayor Vincent C. Gray today released his Fiscal Year 2015 Proposed Budget and Financial Plan. The $10.7 billion budget makes a historic $116 million investment in public education, leverages the District’s continued strong fiscal stability to build on earlier investments in affordable housing, workforce development and improving the quality of life for all District residents. “We have had the fortitude to make often-difficult funding decisions in the past, and now we are reaping some of the benefits of our past fiscal discipline,” Mayor Gray said. “This budget’s historic investment in improving public education, its commitment to boosting health outcomes on the East End of the District, and its additional investments in affordable housing and health care reflect my priorities as well as the District’s values.”

Africa: Carbon Grab - the Next Natural Resource Dilemma?
A Washington-based human rights organization warns of an unprecedented "carbon grab" by governments and investors that will infringe upon the rights of indigenous peoples in low- and middle-income countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa. Research conducted by the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) reveals that there are no laws to guarantee that indigenous peoples and local communities will benefit from the global trade of carbon credits as nations cope with carbon emissions that impact global climate change. The Divine Comedy Revisited by African Artists: Featuring Julie Mehretu & Aida Muluneh
The Museum of Modern Art (MMK) in Frankfurt, Germany is currently hosting an exhibition featuring several contemporary African artists including Ethiopian-American painter Julie Mehretu and Ethiopian photographer Aïda Muluneh. The show, which opened last month and remains on display through July 27th, 2014, is based on the 14th century Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s epic work entitled The Divine Comedy that highlights the author’s reflections on heaven, hell and purgatory.

FY20 14 Services for Victims of Human Trafficking (DOJ)
Department of Justice announces funding to provide services to victims of human trafficking in two different program areas: 1) comprehensive services for all victims of human trafficking, and 2) specialized services for victims of human trafficking. Funding under both program areas also will support efforts to increase the capacity of communities to respond to human trafficking victims through the development of interagency partnerships, professional training, and public awareness activities.

This service is being provided by the DC Department of Health to help residents find available health care services in the District. The information included on DC Health Search was provided by each site, and has not been independently confirmed by the Department of Health. DC Health Search should not be taken as a recommendation for services by the Department of Health. To be included on DC Health Search, sites have to meet the following requirements:
- Provide primary medical care; and
- Accept Medicaid for patient insurance; and
- Offer patients a sliding payment scale based on their income; and/or
- Provide health care services regardless of a patient’s ability to pay for services.

The District of Columbia Community Health Needs Assessment is a comprehensive analysis and review of the health and quality of life of DC residents. This document was developed by utilizing information collected by the DC Health Department (DOH) through various survey instruments, disease registries, and other essential databases maintained and administered by DOH and, for the first time, consolidated in one report. Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is authorized to make incentive payments to eligible professionals and eligible hospitals demonstrating meaningful use of certified Electronic Health Recording (EHR) technology. "Meaningful Use" means providers need to show they're using certified EHR technology in specific ways that can be measured significantly in quality and in quantity.
