OAA to Host Food Industry “Growing Local” Workshop
Launching First of a Series of Industry Specific Workshops to Support and Nurture District Businesses
The Office on African Affairs (OAA) is set to host a “Growing Local” Food Industry business workshop as part of its citywide effort to support local African businesses. The January 27th workshop is the first of a series of industry-specific workshops following OAA’s well-received, 2nd Annual Business Symposium: “From DC to Africa: Growing Local, Going Global” held on November 25, 2013. Over 300 business owners and entrepreneurs attended the day-long symposium which facilitated connections to much needed local, federal and non-profit resources and opportunities for growing and expanding their businesses in the District. The symposium also yielded qualitative recommendations, from the community, on the need for more focused, business industry-specific outreach and education.

The first part of the program, open to all attendees, will feature a series of presentations administered by DC government agencies – Department of Small and Local Business Development, Department of Health, Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs and Alcohol Beverage Regulation Administration. The second portion of the program, reserved for the first 20 pre-registered business owners, will feature one-on-one clinics.

The show, which attempts to recreate the extinction of the Herero tribe at the hands of their German colonizers, will be preceded by a mix and mingle reception and followed by a presentation and Q&A by Dr. Ngondi Kamatuka, President of the Association of the Ovaherero Genocide.

Meet OAA’s New Communications Intern - Chelsea Brown
Chelsea Brown is a third year student at Howard University’s School of Communications. She is a Legal Communications major and English minor with a strong passion for African culture and history. She has briefly studied the language and culture of Swahili at Pwani University in Kenya. After graduation, she plans to enroll in law school, obtain her juris doctorate, and eventually serve the public as an attorney and ultimately a judge. In her free time, Chelsea competes as an attorney on the Howard University Mock Trial team. She also enjoys volunteering at the DC Girls Inc. after school program, cooking healthy meals, and exploring the city.

District Remains Among Fastest-Growing Areas in the United States
Mayor Vincent C. Gray today welcomed the latest estimates from the US Census Bureau showing that the District’s population continued its rapid growth between July 2012 and July 2013, adding 13,022 residents and keeping DC among the list of fastest-growing areas in the country.

Mayor Gray Signs Minimum-Wage Increase into Law
Mayor Vincent C. Gray today joined Council Chairman Phil Mendelson in signing the Minimum Wage Amendment Act of 2013 into law. The bill increases the minimum wage for all District workers to $9.50 per hour starting in July of 2014, and includes provisions that will further increase the wage in the future.

This week, the District launched a common application and lottery system for D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) and public charter schools. Glaucoma Awareness Month Observed in the District
Glaucoma silently steals eyesight from more than 2.7 million Americans each year and officials at the National Eye Institute in Bethesda, Md., project that more than 4.2 million will have the disease by 2030. Small Housing Provider Seminar
The Department of Housing and Community Development will host a free seminar on the “First Year in the Life of a Small Housing Provider.” All are welcome to attend. 2014 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards
The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is inviting applications for the 2014 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards. The twelve award-winning programs will receive $10,000 and an invitation to accept their award from the President’s Committee’s Honorary Chairman, First Lady Michelle Obama at a ceremony at the White House. In addition, winners will receive an award plaque, the opportunity to attend the Annual Awardee Conference in Washington, DC in the summer of 2014, and will be featured on the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award website.
