What a Sequester Means to Many in DC

Congress returns to Washington today from a week long recess. Unless Congress acts by March 1st, a series of automatic cuts—called the sequester—will take effect
that threaten government funded positions, programs and services that will affect thousands of middle class jobs, and may cut vital services for children, seniors, people with mental illness and the military.   Across the country, citizens are calling their members of Congress to urge them to vote to prevent sequestration and avoid a bigger crisis.

The White House has taken the time to break down what the crisis will mean to each state, including the District of Columbia, see more information here.

Celebrating Valentine's Day with Seniors

Valentine's Day 2013

DCOA Executive Director John M. Thompson, Ph.D. spent part of Valentine's Day with two groups in the community.  The WHUR 96.3 FM presented with partner FedEx the Send Love to Our Seniors event held at Carroll Manor Nursing Home, celebrating more than 100 residents with music, entertainment and floral bouquets.  Dr. Thompson along with Ms. Senior D.C. Mary L. McCoy greeted the seniors to help celebrate the occasion.  Many nursing home residents do not receive visitors on holidays and special occasions and the celebration provides a great social activity for the residents.

Dr. Thompson also greeted seniors at North Michigan Park Recreation Center as they held a luncheon to celebrate Valentine's Day.  Information tables were also available with DCOA resources and other helpful information from others.

Long-Term Care Options for the Future

What’s the State of Long-Term Care Financing—and What Are the Options for the Future?

National experts will summarize the key issues affecting the nation’s long-term care system—and offer new insights—at a March 20 discussion sponsored by The SCAN Foundation. Practical options will also be presented for increasing access to affordable long-term care services for the millions of Americans needing this support. The timing of this discussion is right, as Congress recently created a national commission to develop a plan for the nation’s growing long-term care needs. A series of policy papers will also be released.

The National Press Club
529 14th Street, N.W., 13th Floor
