State Board and Deputy Mayor Kick
Off Every Day Counts! Attendance
Campaign
Washington, DC- The State Board of Education (SBOE) and
Deputy Mayor for Education’s joint attendance campaign, Every Day Counts! will kick off tonight at Calvin Coolidge High
School. Members of the SBOE will join Deputy Mayor Jennifer Niles,
Calvin Coolidge High School Principal Richard Jackson, and members of the citywide
Truancy Task Force this evening to announce the initiative and talk about the
importance of attendance.
The Every Day Counts! campaign helps schools incentivize attendance by
providing rewards for individual students who improve their attendance.
Research shows that missing just 10 percent of the school year can have
dramatic effects on academic success in future grades. Even absences in
preschool have been shown to cause delays throughout grade school.
“Being in school every day is
vital,” said Jack Jacobson, SBOE President and Ward 2 Member. “The State Board
is proud to be a part of a renewed focus on ensuring that our students are in school
and where they need to be to succeed.”
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and
more information about the campaign can be found at attendance.dc.gov.
The State Board of
Education provides policy leadership, support, advocacy, and oversight of
public education to ensure that every student is valued and learns the skills
and knowledge necessary to become informed, competent, and contributing global
citizens. More information about the SBOE can be found at sboe.dc.gov.
