President's Message

Welcome to our returning and new members! I am happy to announce that YGL-LA is back in action! We have selected a new board and, together, we are ready to rock your government career in Los Angeles!

As promised, we started 2012 by diversifying our leadership board to include local and state government employees. Take a look at the Los Angeles chapter tab on the revamped YGL website and Meet The Team. Along with our traditional federal agencies in Los Angeles, you will now find board members from the Los Angeles Mayor's Office, the Office of California State Controller, and the City of Long Beach. YGL-LA members are now guaranteed to be well represented and will find opportunities for innovation and collaboration across all levels of government in Los Angeles.

The new board held its first meeting on April 25th and was hard at work during the month of May, planning an aggressive next step in the history of our young chapter and the professional development of you, our membership. Allow me to share recent milestones, upcoming initiatives, and opportunities for you to get involved:  

• Continuation of our daily news and discussion through YGL-LA social media channels regarding all things government in LA. Be informed and get connected!
• Launch of our Student Ambassadors Program with YGL-LA members on panel and speaking at local colleges and universities promoting government careers. Volunteer to be a face for young government in LA!
• Selection of YGL-LA Gold Fellow, David Azevedo, in coordination with the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy. First YGL Gold Fellow in the nation!
• Quarterly YGL-LA newsletter coming to your inbox this June. Contributors and news wanted!
• Volunteer and outreach opportunities within greater Los Angeles. Organizers needed!
• Professional mixers with local government leaders discussing career and leadership this summer. Help us access and build your networks!

Lastly, a reminder to get your aspiring-government-leader-self to DC this July 26-27th for the annual Next Generation of Government Training Summit (NextGen), hosted by GovLoop and YGL. We are proud to announce OPM has, once again, approved the Summit as training in compliance with 5 U.S.C. Chapter 41 for federal employees. Tell your boss! YGL-LA will be leading a breakout session at the Summit - Maximizing Your Early Years: From NextGen to SES. Travel with the YGL-LA chapter to the #1 training conference for Gen X and Y leaders in government and show DC the left coast is the best coast!
