May 2012 | Volume 1 Issue 3

A Note from the President

Along with the blooming flowers and growing crops, the Young Government Leaders of Albuquerque (YGL ABQ) chapter is flourishing this spring.  Ever since our very first event, a Holiday Meet & Greet in December of 2011, the YGL ABQ board has been hard at work.  So far this year we’ve hosted a variety of exciting events including a networking session at El Pinto Restaurant, an inspirational career development presentation, and a fundraiser and group walk for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer foundation.  Most notably, though, in just five months our membership has grown from zero to over 100!  Nationwide, the Young Government Leaders organization has a total of 2,672 members and counting.

We are so excited to be part of the national effort to equip the current and future generations of government leaders.  Through support from the New Mexico Federal Executive Board and YGL ABQ members, we expect the local chapter to positively  impact the Albuquerque metro area and leave a legacy for future generations.  The Young Government Leaders of Albuquerque chapter strives to educate, inspire, and transform present and up-and-coming leaders in public service.  I invite you to challenge yourself this year to get involved in YGL ABQ as we come together to network, learn, and lead in our community and nation.

~ Abigail Fajardo, YGL ABQ President

Making a Difference in Our Community

Thanks to everyone who helped make our first community event a success. With the combined efforts at IL Vicino restaurant and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, our team raised over $500 for the American Cancer Society. About 20 YGL ABQ members participated with over 20,000 fellow walkers in a 5-mile walk along the Rio Grande to raise over $230,000. One of YGL ABQ's values is to value the community around us. By raising funds and awareness of the threat of breast cancer, we can make a difference in our community.
