Navigating your Career Path, Invest in Yourself

If starting out strong is one of the keys to long-term success, then YGL ABQ is sprinting in the right direction.  On March 21st YGL ABQ held its first professional development workshop.  The workshop focused on building your career path and developing professional relationships.  Keynote speaker Cathy Grossman, Assistant Director for Field Service Operations for the US Forest Service, highlighted key points that will contribute to being successful as you navigate down your career path.  Grossman, who oversees a staff of over 300 people at the US Forest Service’s regional service center, underscored the importance of arming yourself with the skills and knowledge to be a top candidate in today’s ever competitive federal workforce.

YGL ABQ member Kim Barone said Grossman was a prime example of someone who started as a young person in government and worked hard to develop excellent leadership skills. “She worked her way up, taking on tough assignments here and abroad to be where she is today managing over 300 people. Her lessons were inspiring, valuable, and especially applicable to our careers,” said Barone.

One of the main points that Grossman discussed was the importance of investing in yourself. Setting goals, both personal and work-related, gives you a roadmap to know where you want to go and what is needed to get there. Additionally, keeping records throughout your career is vital. Records of training, achievements, promotions, performance reviews, etc, is all part of making sure that you take care of you. Grossman stressed that “no one will take care of you as good as you will” and if you don’t invest in yourself then why would your supervisor want to?
