Happy Halloween! This fall our office has been hard at work for District 2. Recently, I presented to the City Councils in Hayward, Union City, and Newark. Additionally, our office hosted a town hall at the Niles Veterans Hall in Fremont and presented at the Sunol Citizens Advisory Committee. These presentations provided information on current initiatives our office is moving forward on, and served as an opportunity for constituents to interact with our office.
In addition to meeting with various individuals and groups, our office hosted some of our main annual events, including the 35th Annual Hayward Volunteer Recognition and Awards Dinner. This event, gave us an opportunity to recognize the selfless and important work of the many volunteers throughout the City of Hayward. Thank you again, to the 45 award winners, for their continued work to make our community better.
As we head into the end of the year, my office will continue to meet with folks to move District 2 forward. I look forward to ongoing collaboration with non-profits, community leaders, and businesses to build upon the important work they do in our District. Being accessible to you is important to me. It was wonderful, spending the morning with the teachers and students of Southgate Elementary, on October 3. International Walk and Roll to School Week is a fun way to encourage students and parents to explore walking or biking to school. Congratulations, to all the students who walked and biked to Southgate Elementary on October 3 and every day!

On October 5, 2012, Sunol Glen Elementary celebrated their 20th Annual Walk-A-Thon and Ribbon Cutting for their brand new track. With a grant from the District 2 office and generous volunteers from the community the school was able complete the track around their field for students to participate in increased physical activities and competitions.

The Second Annual Science in the Park was a smashing success! Thousands of families came out to participate in the various activities that made science and heath fun for children. Thank you to all the sponsors, exhibitors, community partners, and volunteers that made this event happen. It is critical that we partner with local school districts, community groups, and families to encourage kids to pursue healthy lifestyles.

On October 19, the Woodlands and Habitat Restoration Project was officially kicked-off. This habitat restoration project will restore native habitat for wildlife, puts sustainability principles into practice, and provides education, training, and job opportunities for youth in our community.
Environmental protection and restoration are critical to creating livable communities. Our office is happy to spearhead this 40 year restoration project in the Union City hills – the largest such project occurring in the East Bay. |

Join the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, November 13 in a Welcome Home celebration and ceremony to recognize and honor our veterans. A resource fair will also take place to provide information to veterans in need of benefits/services.

You can also join our office to help veterans by donating food, blankets, or coats to Operation Warrior’s Foundation. Your donation will help our veterans and their families, who are in need of these precious items, as the cold season approaches. Collections will take place October 1 through December 14.

 Community Resources for Independent Living (CRIL) has partnered with the City of Hayward to offer seniors and persons with disabilities the opportunity to learn how to use different forms of transportation, such as BART, AC Transit and Paratransit Programs.
Among other topics, participants will learn how to obtain a RTC Clipper Card, how to use 511.org to plan a trip using AC Transit and BART, and how to safely use a mobility device such as a wheelchair, scooter, cane, etc. while on public transportation.
Mobility Workshops - every 2nd Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
Learn how to use Alameda County’s fixed route, public transit and regional services.
Quarterly Group Trips:
Have fun while practicing the skills learned during mobility workshops by traveling in groups to places like the Oakland Museum and the Ballet, De Young Museum, Legion of Honor and other fun locations!
Individual Travel Training:
For those interested in learning specific routes to the doctor’s office, work, school, grocery store, etc.
You can also take advantage of a free program CRIL is hosting with AC Transit - AC Transit Tether Strap Appointments and Markings. Do you travel on AC Transit? Would you like to have tether straps attached or markings placed onto your wheelchair? During you’re free appointment, AC Transit personnel will identify the best securement options for you to safely travel on public transportation.

Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley (HEBSV) offers home repairs valuing up to $15,000 to qualifying households. No payments are required and the loan will be forgiven in five years if the home is not sold or transferred.
Qualifying households:
- Own and occupy a property in Alameda, Contra Costa, or Santa Clara County
- Have limited assets and an income below 80% of the Area Median Income for your county
- Have a need for home repairs that HEBSV can address
- Be willing to contribute time in exchange for HEBSV’s services (between 8 and 24 hours of “sweat equity”, or volunteer service)
- Meet HEBSV’s general selection criteria
- Agree to the Home Repair Program terms of repayment
