Monsoon Season, Maricopa County Wins Awards and Community Events

 August 11, 2017

A message from Supervisor Gates

Dear Friends,

August is here, the kids are going back to school, and monsoon season is in full swing. While we love the time in summer when we bear witness to amazing storms and temperatures drop, monsoons can turn dangerous very quickly. I encourage you to read below as I have highlighted the Maricopa County Flood Control District. The FCD does an amazing job of working year round to keep us safe from the powerful Arizona flash floods.  Additionally, FCD is beginning to install visual warning signs in areas where the road is known to flood.  You will find one of these signs on Old Stage Road in New River.

I also want to highlight all of the Maricopa County departments who won National Association of Counties (NACo) awards in 2017. This shows our county departments and employees’ dedication to innovation and customer service. We truly appreciate the daily efforts of all who serve the public at Maricopa County.

One brief reminder, we will be resuming our monthly community events in September with our September County Coffee on September 7th from 8:00 - 9:00 am at Deer Valley Airport Restaurant. I look forward to seeing you all then.

Have a great remainder of August.

All my best,

Flood Control District

NACo Awards

Maricopa County received 54 National Association of Counties (NACo) Awards in 2016 for various department and inter-departmental initiatives. We are extremely proud of all who earned NACo awards at the 2017 ceremony and have highlighted a few below.

Prickly Pedal

The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation department received a NACo award for their efforts contributing towards the Prickly Pedal Mountain Bike race that spans District 3 and 4. Riders take on rugged terrain between Cavecreek and Lake Pleasant. The race has quickly become one of Arizona top bike races.

The Maricopa County Public Health department created a mobile device application called "Maricopa Healthy" to encourage and inspire a healthier lifestyle through providing healthy recipies, park and trail information, and local activities that all lend a hand to living a healthier lifestyle.
