Minneapolis Public Schools Offers Summer Meal Services for All Children Under 18

Minneapolis Public Schools is sponsoring 110 summer meal service sites, allowing all children (18 and under) to eat for FREE this summer.

Check out Hunger Impact Partners' new mobile app called SUMMER EATS MINNESOTA, which helps youth and families find summer meal site locations! You can download the app at the App Store and Google Play. The app shows the nearest serving sites, their menus, and days and hours of operation.

City Seeks Southern Green Zone Task Force Members

The City of Minneapolis is looking for community members to be a part of the City of Minneapolis Southern Green Zones Task Force.

The Task Force will develop an action-oriented Work Plan specific to the Southern Green Zone, which includes the greater Phillips community and Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. The Work Plan should identify actions that promote health and economic well-being using environmentally-beneficial strategies.

The Task Force will meet at least once per month from September 2017 through January 2018 to develop the Work Plan. Workgroup members will be responsible for attending meetings, reviewing materials between meetings, and making a recommendation to City Council in Quarter 1 of 2018.

Applications are due by July 26, 2017.

UST Seeks Input on Agriculture Practices through Survey

Do you own, manage, or operate an urban garden or farm within the Twin Cities?

As part of a study funded by the National Science Foundation on nutrient recycling through urban agriculture, a team from the University of St. Thomas (UST) Biology Department are conducting a survey on garden management practices throughout the Twin Cities.

MPRB Seeks Input on Ecological System Plan

How do you connect with nature in Minneapolis Parks? What is most important to you?

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) are working together to create the Ecological System Plan. This plan will set a vision for making parks and public lands more friendly to the environment. Ecological System Plan topics include Air Quality Issues, Biodiversity & Habitat Quality, Habitat Connectivity, Carbon Sequestration, Stormwater Runoff, Sustainable Energy Generation, and Urban Heat Island Effect. This annual Farm to School Community BBQ is a FREE event to celebrate the local food system, kick off Farm to School month in October, and provide an opportunity for the community to meet their farmers and chefs.

This event offers a unique opportunity to promote your organization’s role in the community’s food system and engage with families. Tables are encouraged to have kid/family-friendly activities that emphasize nutrition, wellness, local food and farming. To register, complete this REGISTRATION FORM by Friday, August 4th.

Free EBT Equipment for Farmers Markets and Direct Marketing Farmers 

The Farmers Market Coalition (FMC) announced funding available for free electronic benefit transfer (EBT) processing equipment offered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Free SNAP EBT Equipment Program.

Additional funding has been made available, and new applications are being accepted. Apply now through November 2017. Funding is limited, and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Funding Available for Healthy Eating Success Stories

from the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield

The Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota delivers on Blue Cross' long-term commitment to improve the health of all Minnesotans by tackling the leading root causes of preventable disease: tobacco use, lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating. They collaborate with organizations statewide to increase health equity, transform communities, and create a healthier state.

The Center is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for their Healthy Eating Success Stories funding initiative. They are seeking to fund organizations at $10,000 each, to showcase innovative, successful healthy eating work.

The application deadline is Monday, August 7, at 1:00pm (Central Time).

Online Food Safety Training

Using short informative and engaging animated lessons and videos, the Food Handler Level 1 and Level 2 Training courses teach food workers basic food safety practices. Topics include: keeping food safe, temperature danger zone, hot and cold holding, avoiding cross-contamination, personal hygiene, and cleaning and sanitizing.

The trainings take 1 to 1 ½ hours to complete, and are available online 24/7.

The Level 1 course is available in English and Spanish. The Level 2 course is available in eight languages including English, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese and American Sign Language.

A Food Handler Training certificate and card is awarded to every person who successfully completes the training. Note: The Food Handler Trainings are for food workers. The Food Handler Training courses are not Certified Food Manager Training. Find certified food manager classes on the Minnesota Department of Health website.
