In partnership with Brightside we will be cleaning up the 9th District this Saturday, October 26, 2013, from 8:30 am – Noon. Plan to meet in the lower parking lot of Mellwood Arts Center at 8:30 am. Enjoy donated breakfast sandwiches from the Clifton McDonalds and hot coffee from Heine Brothers’ Coffee. At 9:00 a.m. volunteers will start cleaning up along the Mellwood/Zorn corridor. FREE bags, gloves, tools and t-shirts will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP) is hosting a National drug take back day on Saturday, October 26, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at various collection sites in Jefferson County. My office has received several inquiries about where to purchase rain barrels. I thought I’d share the following information for future reference.

15Thousand Farmers is a non-profit group in Louisville that supports people in backyard gardening. They sell rain barrels at the Plant Kingdom, 4101 Westport Road. Frankfort Avenue will host the last Food Truck Sunday of the season on Sunday, October 27th from 11:00am-4:00pm. The event will include fare from local food trucks and a mini farmer's market on the lawn of St. Joe's Children's Home, 2823 Frankfort Avenue. Retailers along Frankfort Avenue will host trick or treating for the whole family, and attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the United Crescent Hill Ministries food pantry. Participating food trucks include French-Indo Canada, Grind, Jam Pan, Lil Cheezers, Sweet N Savory, Johnny's Diner Car, and Hi-Five Doughnuts. Louisville Metro Parks & Recreation will host a series of public meetings to gather input on the Olmsted Parkways Shared Use Path preliminary line and grade plan, a bicycle/pedestrian improvement project. The focus of the meetings will be the proposed design for building a shared use path along the parkways, and the design for a road diet to allow for bicycle lanes along the parkways.

- October 29, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Shawnee Golf Course clubhouse, 460 Northwestern Parkway

The Olmsted Parkways master plan was completed in January 2008, developed with citizen input gained from seven public meetings held throughout 2007, and outlines alternatives for bicycle and pedestrian improvements for the parkways. Metro Parks is now completing the Phase 1 Design component of the project, which includes all of Southern Parkway, all of Algonquin Parkway, and Southwestern Parkway from Gibson Lane to Broadway. The meeting will begin with an open house at 6:00pm. The presentation of the plan begins at 7:00pm, followed by a question and answer period.

The Great St. Matthews Pumpkin Caper, sponsored by Troop 115 Boy Scouts of America, will run October 19-31 (or until the pumpkins run out!). The pumpkin sale is the major fundraiser for the troop for each calendar year. Proceeds help the troop pay for operating expenses as well as help individual Scouts' fees for trips, uniforms, and other expenses.
The Pumpkin Caper will be held at Beargrass Christian Church, 4100 Shelbyville Rd. Hours will be 4-9 pm Monday-Friday and 10am - 9pm Saturday and Sunday. Beargrass Christian has sponsored Troop 115 continuously since 1943. The Pumpkin Caper has been the troop's major fundraising effort since the 1980's. Credit cards accepted.

Citizens who have damaged household items from the record rainfall earlier this month can take it to the city’s Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Ave. There will be no charge for citizens of Louisville/Jefferson County. However, residents will have to provide two forms of identification to verify their Jefferson County residency. They will need to present to the attendant a utility bill and a driver’s license. The flood debris drop-off service will run from Tuesday, October 8th – Saturday, October 26th, 2013. The hours of operation for the free drop off are: Monday -- Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Please note that the Waste Reduction Center is normally closed Monday and Tuesday but will be opened for citizen flood debris drop-off only. Commercial/business vehicles will have to pay the normal fees for dumping flood debris or other materials during this period. If a citizen hires an individual or business to remove the flood debris, the citizen will need to accompany them to the drop-off center or provide the hauler with the same two forms of identification to present at the facility. The Pace Car Program is a citizen-based traffic calming initiative that encourages residents to take responsibility for their own driving while setting the "pace" for safer streets and neighborhoods. Residents will be able to sign an official pace car registration form and pledge the following:
“Drive the speed limit on city streets, especially in residential areas, setting the pace for vehicles behind me; stop completely at STOP signs and don’t run red lights; be courteous to all bicyclists; pedestrians and other motorists; give myself enough travel time so that I am not sacrificing safety or courtesy; devote my full attention to driving by avoiding distractions, i.e.: cell phones; not be pressured by the impatience of other drivers to exceed the speed limit; keep my sense of humor, life’s too short to let driving stress my out!; and display the Metro Pace Car Program decals or bumper stickers.”
By signing this pledge you will receive an official pace car bumper sticker or car window sticker to display on your vehicle. The sticker will alert other drivers that they are taking part in the citizen-based effort to address the problems of traffic speed and safety.

Friday, October 25: Historic Frankfort Avenue will host a special F.A.T. Friday Halloween Hop from 6:00 to 10:30 p.m. Hoppers are encouraged to dress in costume and bring the whole family for trick or treating along The Avenue. Many businesses will host special offers, live music and refreshments. Free trolleys will run along Frankfort Avenue from Cannons Lane to River Road. The F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop, held year-round on the final Friday of every month, provides FREE parking and transportation to participating shops, restaurants and galleries along the Frankfort, Mellwood and Story Avenue corridor.
