School administrators, wellness committee members, school nurses, PE teachers, foodservice directors, and others are invited to participate in the webinar provided by Iowa Department of Education on, Tuesday, January 17 from 9:30-10:30am.
The Webinar will Provide an Overview of the Following:
- USDA Local Wellness Policy Final Rule
- Iowa Association of School Boards Sample Policy
- Child Nutrition Administrative Review Questions
- School Wellness Policy Resources
The final rule requires all Local Education Agencies (LEAs) to begin developing and revising local wellness policies during the school year 2016-17. LEA’s must fully comply with the final rule by June 30, 2017.
A recording of the webinar will be sent to all those that register.
The online application for the 2017 Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60) Student Ambassador National Summit is now available! Completing this application is required if the student would like to be considered as Iowa’s Fuel Up to Play 60 State Ambassador and/or attend the Fuel Up to Play 60 Student Ambassador National Summit, which will be held July 24-27, 2017 in Minneapolis, MN.
To Become Eligible the Student Must:
- Reach 45,000 points on their student dashboard
- Be at least 11 years old by July 31, 2017
- Entering the 6th grade for the 2017-2018 school year
- Have a Program Advisor registered at their school

Iowa has new schools added to USDA's HealthierUS School Challenge Award list! The award is a voluntary certification initiative recognizing schools that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity. Iowa State University is offering schools the opportunity to participate in a project to evaluate school wellness environments using a newly created audit tool. Schools that enroll will have a school wellness leader or team complete the School Wellness Environment Audit Tool and have two 3rd to 5th grade classrooms complete the Youth Activity Profile, which assesses the status of student’s health-related behaviors at school as part of the process.
Individuals that complete the audit tool will be asked to provide feedback to help refine the tool for future use and benefit to schools. Participating schools will receive summary report infographics displaying their results of the School Wellness Environment Audit Tool.
Schools will receive a $500 stipend for participating. For more information, please contact Joey Lee at jalee3@iastate.edu.

Children need to learn how to make healthy choices from the minute they walk in the school's front door to the minute they leave at the end of the school day. Join this webinar to learn about policies and regulations related to the school food environment and come away with project ideas and resources for healthy fundraisers, celebrations and family events, healthy snack programs and non-food rewards.

Evergreen Packaging and KidsGardening.org are presenting their third annual national Carton 2 Garden™ Contest. Open to public and private schools, contest winners will be selected based on their implementation of an innovative garden creation featuring creative and sustainable uses for repurposed milk and juice cartons. There are divisions for elementary and middle/high schools.
Your school can get started by collecting at least 100 empty cartons from your home, community, or cafeteria. After gathering cartons, it’s time to design and construct purposeful garden items and structures using them. Your school will have the chance to win one of 14 prizes, up to $5,000!

Camp Kesem - University of Iowa is offering a free summer camp program for children affected by a parent’s cancer this coming summer from June 4-10 for children ages 6-16. Camp will be held at Camp Little Cloud in Epworth, Iowa and will be staffed and managed by student volunteers from The University of Iowa.
The camper application will open to the public on January 15th, spots are limited and will fill up fast. To those who are interested, contact Taylor Hayden at Iowa.outreach@campkesem.org.
