Governor Mead Sends National Guard to Assist with Flood Damage in Lusk

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Governor Mead has deployed specialized teams from the Wyoming National Guard in response to the extraordinary flood and the damage it has caused in Manville, Lusk and Niobrara County. In addition to the National Guard, the Governor has mobilized the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Transportation, the Red Cross, the Department of Health, the Game and Fish Department, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Corrections, the Department of Environmental Quality and others to the area. Governor Mead will travel to Lusk later this afternoon.

“The situation in Niobrara County is heart wrenching. I have been in touch with local officials and county commissioners. Help is on the way,” said Governor Mead. “The National Guard and Homeland Security are coordinating with local officials to take all measures to keep people safe and to help in any way possible.”

A local command center has been set up at the fairgrounds in Lusk with water, food and shelter. The command center can be contacted at (307) 334-3693. Residents with private wells concerned about water quality and safety should contact the command center. The Wyoming Highway Patrol has asked that motorists find alternate routes around Niobrara County. Travelers in the area are encouraged to check www.wyoroad.info for updates on road and travel conditions.

SourceGas also contacted the Governor’s office with information:

“During an extreme weather event, SourceGas advises that customers DO NOT turn off your natural gas, even if you are evacuated. If you smell gas leave the area immediately and call 911 or SourceGas’ 24-hour Customer Contact Center at 1-800-563-0012.”
