WYOMING STOCK MARKET GAME AWARD WINNERS – 2015 SPRING COMPETITION

Jackson Hole High School Students

Honored By The Wyoming Council On Economic Education
Mr. James Rooks, Social Studies Teacher

Mr. Kent Eberspacher, Wyoming Stock Market Game Coordinator with the Wyoming Council on Economic Education, is preparing to launch the 2016 Wyoming Stock Market Game in February. He anticipates that over 600 students from Wyoming schools will participate in the 10-week stock market simulation. Students will be given an imaginary dollar amount to invest, and will be taught to strategically place their money in stocks, bonds and/or mutual funds for maximum profits. They will be encouraged to focus on the importance of long-term investing.

Last year, Star Valley High School, Niobrara County High School, Laramie High School, Laramie Junior High, Glenrock Middle School, Osmond Elementary and Big Piney Elementary School were honored for their performance in the simulation. The two classrooms with the highest returns on investment were Tongue River High School and Evanston High School.

There is a writing component to the Stock Market Game called InvestWrite. Students are presented with a topic, and students write an essay on the topic. The essays can be submitted for judging at the InvestWrite Essay Contest fall competition offered to all students who are participating in the Stock Market Game.

A national companion program called the Capitol Hill Challenge, sponsored by the SIFMA Foundation, will also commence this spring. Last year, over 5,000 teams from around the country participated in the challenge. Lander Valley High School had the highest ranked team from Wyoming and was in serious contention for the winning prize: an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C.

The Wyoming Stock Market Game has been an important part of Wyoming business and economic education for over 26 years. The Wyoming Council on Economic Education, housed at the University of Wyoming, continues to sponsor the event.

CAREER TECHNICAL STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Meet Angela Sweep, New FCCLA State Advisor

Angela was raised in Ft. Bridger, WY on a fourth generation cattle ranch. After graduating from Mountain View High School, she attended the University of Wyoming and earned a degree in Family & Consumer Science Education. During college, she met and married Justin Sweep, who also graduated from UW with degrees in Business Administration and Spanish.

They then moved to Boise, Idaho for career opportunities. Angela taught FCS at Borah High School for three years, where she started an FCCLA program. When their first child was born, they decided that she would stop teaching. They now have 3 children; Caden (12), Jaxon (10), and Addelyn (5). After five years in Boise, they were excited to have an opportunity to return to Wyoming when Justin received a job at the Bridger Valley Electric Cooperative in Mountain View.

Although she has not been in the classroom lately, she has stayed active in FCCLA through workshops, trainings and conventions. She has also been a volleyball coach for fifteen years, twelve as a varsity coach.

“I love working with students and helping them realize their potential. FCCLA is a wonderful program that can provide amazing experiences for youth. I am thrilled to be a part of it!”

Design of the Future

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office, in partnership with the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) and the Idaho National Lab (INL), invites both high school and university (undergraduate & graduate) teams to explore the future of geothermal energy and literally draw the heat beneath your feet. Teams of 2-3 members will research data, interpret information and design an infographic that tells a compelling story about the future of geothermal energy. The winning teams in each category will receive $2,500. The grand prize winner will receive $2,500 and a trip to the Geothermal Resource Council 40th Annual Meeting on Oct 23-26 in Sacramento, CA.

Geothermal energy is a renewable energy, used for thousands of years. It is simply power derived from Earth’s internal heat, extracted from shallow ground to several miles below the surface. This heat can be used to generate electricity or heat and cool buildings directly. Geothermal energy is poised for huge growth. It is estimated that the amount of heat within six miles of the Earth’s surface contains 50,000 times more energy than all the oil and natural gas resources in the world.
