NEWS: Army National Guard, Wisconsin DNR partnering for Sauk Prairie Recreation Area site survey

Approximately 200 Soldiers from the Wisconsin Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 105th Cavalry Regiment will conduct a site survey March 28 at the Sauk Prairie Recreation Area in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

The Soldiers will assist the DNR in identifying unique features and hazards, classify road conditions and mark boundaries of the site that are owned by the DNR. The Sauk Prairie Recreation Area consists of a portion of the decommissioned 7,354-acre Badger Army Ammunition Plant. The DNR, Ho-Chunk Nation and Dairy Forage Research Center all own portions of the site.

The site survey represents an opportunity for the Soldiers of the 105th Cavalry to conduct training on some of its primary military tasks – primarily reconnaissance and route clearance – while also providing a public service for the community it serves.

“We’re excited to partner with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources at the Sauk Prairie Recreation Area,” said Lt. Col. Jeffrey Alston, the commander of the 1st Battalion, 105th Cavalry. “It’s a great opportunity for our Soldiers to test the military skills on which we train all year, but it’s also a privilege to conduct training that will serve the public and ultimately benefit the people of Wisconsin.”

Two elements of the unit – A Troop and B Troop – will spend the day conducting their analysis before compiling data points and information and presenting it to the DNR. The 105th is headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, with troops located in Fort Atkinson, Watertown and Reedsburg, Wisconsin.
