RESENDING FROM NOVEMBER 23, 2022: Celebrating Holidays Safely
Respiratory (influenza, RSV, and COVID-19) and gastrointestinal infections are rising as we prepare for the holiday season. Wisconsin’s long-term care residents and their loved ones are looking forward to spending time together. DQA encourages providers to plan accordingly for these upcoming holiday visits. It is important that you communicate your visitation expectations in relation to infection control protocols with residents, staff, and visitors to ensure the well-being of your residents and to keep everyone safe this holiday season and beyond.
On September 23, 2022, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released updated visitation guidance to ensure long-term care facilities, residents, and their families can visit safely and enjoy the holiday season. These recommendations are addressed to nursing homes but are applicable for assisted living facilities and other long-term care facilities as well.
Core Principles of Infection Prevention
The core principles for infection prevention consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations should continue to be maintained in order to make gatherings and visitation safer.
Everyday Infection Prevention and Control Practices
Implementing other infection prevention best practices can help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses and other infectious agents:
-
Perform hand hygiene. Frequently wash your hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rub.
-
Wear necessary PPE. This may include gown, gloves, eye protection, and well-fitting face mask.
-
Practice respiratory hygiene. Cover coughs and sneezes.
-
Ensure adequate cleaning and disinfection. Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered products and follow the labeling instructions, including dwell time.
-
Stay home if you are ill. Review employee health policies.
-
Stay up to date on all recommended vaccines and booster doses. COVID-19 and flu vaccines may be received at the same time.
