Tri-Tech Students Win National Innovative App Development Challenge
Five students from Tri-Tech Skills Center won a national app development competition sponsored by Verizon Wireless. The students each received a tablet computer and the Tri-Tech Skills Center received a check for $20,000. The students will work with an app design expert from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to make their idea, called Safe&Sound, a reality. The students will be flown to Dallas in June to present it during the National Technology Student Association Conference.
The Safe&Sound team were very excited. Genesis Saucedo, a 17 year-old student from Hanford High School, said "This is my first time ever winning something!"

Friendly Reminder Corner
The Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE)
has been issuing findings during multiple monitoring visits to other states
regarding student dues and affiliation fees. This is a reminder that federal
Perkins funds cannot pay for student dues as well as affiliation fees for
CTSOs. OCTAE questions whether this is an allowable use of Perkins funds for
the following reasons:
1) Supplanting-Section 311 (a) of Perkins – If these
affiliation fees were paid for with non-Federal resources in previous years,
Perkins funds could then not be used in subsequent years to incur these costs.
2) Perkins II regulations 403.71 (c)(2) (i-iv) – These
regulations contain more specific language about allowable and non-allowable
costs uses the verbiage " but is not limited to" if you look at the 4
examples of allowable costs, they really do not tie into paying for fees and dues
and are more related to salaries of staff and curriculum design.
3) Perkins II regulations 403.71 (c)(3)(vI) – contains
more explicit language that Perkins funds were not to be used to pay for
membership dues.
