All aboard the Suffrage Special Whistle Stop Tour!
Mary Mikel Stump and WSHS’s suffrage centennial coordinator Elisa Law have pulled together a fantastic program debuting next month (August 19-26). The Suffrage Special Whistle Stop Tour is a video series produced in collaboration with contractors M Agency and historical society partners across the state, sharing the stories of women change makers in 1909 and today as well. This unique recognition of the suffrage centennial is a case of “making lemonade” after WSHS and the Washington State Women’s Commission canceled the in-person celebration that was planned for Olympia (due to COVID). The Legal System Under the Third Reich
Wednesday, September 2 | 12-1pm PT | Open to All
1 Washington State Bar Ethics CLE Credit Available
Join the Holocaust Center for Humanity and Washington State legal professionals for a special virtual Lawyers CLE program with Professor Lawrence Douglas: "Law as an instrument of Mass Crimes? The Legal System Under the Third Reich." Hitler’s Germany disturbingly demonstrated how a legal system can become an instrument of state-sponsored mass atrocities.
This talk will examine questions such as:
- How did the Nazi state succeed in perverting the German legal system?
- What role did prominent lawyers and judges play in resisting or assisting this perversion of the legal system?
- Are there limits to how law can be perverted before it ceases to function as law?
- What lessons apply from the German case to challenges facing lawyers today?
In addition to legal professionals, this program is open to the public, and will take the place of our weekly Lunch-and-Learn.
