On June 27, CEH held our first annual meeting to share our strategies, affirm CEH’s charter, and receive community feedback. I left the conference both energized by our community’s dedication to making homelessness rare, brief, and one-time, and committed to CEH’s role as a hub for stakeholders to share their knowledge in a way that impacts coordinated, county-wide decision making. We engaged more than 150 people that day in digging into our data, and offering solutions for improvement and change.
This upcoming Monday, August 4th, CEH’s Interagency Council (IAC) holds its annual retreat, and will look back at the path we’ve taken these past 9 years, and look forward towards the goals we want to achieve. The input you shared at the Conference will be key to those discussions.
Here are some of the ‘high-level’ highlights of your input that we’ll discuss on Monday:
- Nurture and engage non-traditional partners – faith, education, neighbors, business, and peers. Create opportunities to engage lay people, community members, and others to instill the sense that this is all our concern to solve, not just something to pay ‘professionals’ to deal with
- Build relationships with landlords. The importance of engaging this cohort is so vital it deserves to be called out separately (and typically was)
- Deepen our engagement with mainstream systems. We need to be responsible for creating these connections and not leave clients to self-navigate. The most important systems where we need to strengthen connections are employment, then mental health, chemical dependency and schools
- Recognize the importance of relationship and community. Strong social capital is critical to help people avoid and exit homelessness. We need to build more of that into our strategies, including peer services
- Be willing to use and critically review data – use it to inform programs and be willing to re-evaluate what we think we know. And we need to value local experiences and data as much as national models
- Figure out the prevention component. Stop saying we don’t know what prevents homelessness and prioritize greater fluency for impactful planning
- Finally, the themes of the need for adequate housing, adequate funding, and flexible/tailored services (not one size fits all), were present in all of the day’s conversations
Thanks again to everyone who participated that day. And thanks for your engagement and commitment year round to make homelessness rare, brief, and one-time in King County.
Mark Putnam Director, CEH
