Walkways and Waterways Project Updates
It has almost been a year since the Kenmore voters passed the Walkways and Waterways bond measure, which will address pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and public access to Kenmore's waterfront. Project sites include 68th Avenue NE, Juanita Drive, Squire's Landing Park, Rhododendron Park, and Log Boom Park. The City is issuing up to $19.75 million in bonds to pay for the projects, which will be repaid over a period of 20 years.
In
2009, City Council proclaimed October 21 “Courtesy is Contagious in
Kenmore” Day as an annual observance in honor of Mr. Crawford, who passed
away in December 2008. Mr. Crawford served on the Kenmore City Council from
the City’s incorporation in August 1998 through December 2005. During his
Council tenure, he held the position of Kenmore’s first Mayor from 1998
through 1999; and held the position of Deputy Mayor from 2000 through 2001.
In 2008, while serving as the president of the Kenmore Heritage Society, Mr.
Crawford played a key role in developing the Kenmore History Path at Log Boom
Park. The Heritage Society dedicated the path to Mr. Crawford in August 2009.
The skate court at Kenmore City Hall is also named after Mr. Crawford.
In
honor of Crawford's services to his community, the City hosts an annual
volunteer clean up event to ensure that courtesy is
contagious in Kenmore! Come join us at the annual park clean up event, Jack V. Crawford ‘Courtesy is Contagious in Kenmore’ Day, on Saturday, October 21 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Log Boom Park. Volunteers are needed to help remove invasive plants and pick up trash. Please bring your own work gloves. Tools, drinks, and snacks will be provided.
For more information or to sign up, contact Shelby Krogh, Volunteer & Events Supervisor at skrogh@kenmorewa.gov or 425 398 8900.

Vote for Kenmore's First Road Intersection Artwork
Earlier in 2017, the City modified the intersection of 84th Avenue NE and Simonds Road to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety and reduce traffic speeds. Subsequently, there is space on the north and south sides of the intersection for artwork to be installed. Inglemoor High School students developed six different geometric designs for the space and need your help picking the winning design. Survey closes October 11.
October
is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the City of Kenmore is helping spread
awareness through the Purple Light Nights® campaign. Purple
Light Nights® is the inspiration of the Covington Domestic Violence
Task Force in King County and is meant to increase the awareness of domestic
violence issues and its affects upon children and families while providing education on building healthy relationships. This is done through the
presence of purple (black) lights in house windows. The City of Kenmore is
giving away a limited supply of lights - stop by City Hall to pick up your light
today.

Fall
celebrations like Halloween are fun times for children. These celebrations also
provide a chance to give out healthy snacks, get physical activity, and focus
on safety. Check out these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe
for trick-or-treaters and party guests.
Going trick-or-treating?
Use reflective materials on costumes and bags to help
drivers see you.
Only walk on
sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic
to stay safe.
Enter homes
only if you're with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Never
accept rides from strangers.
Expecting trick-or-treaters or party guests?
Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free
of obstacles.
Keep candle-lit items away from doorsteps, walkways,
and curtains. Please keep them out of the reach of pets and small
children.
Walk to School Day for Healthier Kids and Communities
Wednesday, October 4 is Walk to School Day, which means a large number of students will be sharing the roadways.
This Wednesday, where there are safe walk routes, the City is encouraging parents who normally drive their child to school to consider letting them walk. It is a great way for kids to get some exercise and it reduces congestion and vehicle emissions around schools.
We are also encouraging people who drive to be on the lookout for students as they cross roadways, especially as the days get shorter and darker. Remember, any intersection is a legal crosswalk, marked or unmarked, and it's the law to stop for a person waiting to cross.
On October 4, the City will be present at Arrowhead Elementary to promote traffic safety - that includes drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
