Determining the eligibility and effective dates of benefits

At the beginning of the school year, determining the effective date of benefits can be different than the rest of the year. The employee has two dates that you must determine, (1) the date of eligibility, and (2) the effective date of benefits.

  • The date of eligibility is typically the first day the employee begins work. This is the date that starts the 31-day clock for the employee to choose benefits.
  • The effective date is the date the benefits begin.

Employees who become eligible for benefits in August

Employees whose first day of work is in August, regardless of when the first day of school is, benefits begin September 1. Examples:

  • The employee’s first day of work is August 23. The first day of school is August 25. Benefits begin September 1.
  • The employee’s first day of work is August 23. The first day of school is September 7. Benefits begin September 1.

Employees who become eligible for benefits in September

Employees whose first day of work is September 1 through the first day of school, benefits begin that day. Examples:

  • The employee’s first day of work is September 2. The first day of school is September 7. Benefits begin September 2.
  • The employee’s first day of work is September 7. The first day of school is September 7. Benefits begin September 7.

Employees whose first day of work is in September after the first day of school, benefits begin October 1. Example:

  • The employee’s first day of work is September 10. The first day of school is September 7. Benefits begin October 1.

SEBB My Account –

1. Before you add a newly eligible employee for the new school year, verify the SEBB My Account Admin has updated the Organizational Profile page with the first day of school for the 2021-22 school year.

SEBB My Account is programmed to calculate the correct effective date for benefits based on the first day of school. Entering newly eligible employees before the First Day of School is updated on the Organizational Profile page will result in incorrect effective dates.

2. When adding the newly eligible employee to SEBB My Account, the Date of Eligibility should be equal to the first day the employee worked. Do not enter the effective date of benefits. Entering the effective date will result in incorrect effective dates.

Note: If the employee begins work on the first day of school in September, the date of eligibility and the effective date will be the same.

3. Based on the First Day of School on the Organizational Profile page and the eligibility date entered on the employee’s account, SEBB My Account will calculate the correct effective date of benefits.
