TJHSST First Week of School Report!

Message from the Principal

Dear TJHSST  Families,

Thank you for a spectacular opening week! By day three we had steadily improved transportation and meal services, with nearly flawless execution by the end of the week. We are also proud to have highly qualified teachers and volunteers in all of our classrooms. Students are forming friendships and connecting with their teachers each day. Most of all, teaching and learning are happening in earnest. Our students report that they've had a great start to the year!

We look forward to you joining your children’s teachers at our in-person Back to School Nights. Details are below, and if you are unable to join us in person, please email your teacher. You can also view all of our curriculum information here.

Please continue to complete forms needed for the start of the school year. Before we know it, Homecoming will be upon us! Until then, plan to join us at our Back to School Bash next week, Thursday, September 1.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ann N. Bonitatibus

Proud Principal, TJHSST

Lockdown Drill Scheduled for Next Week

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. At TJ, we have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at TJ next week.

A Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping TJ safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe

Learn more about Schoology

We are continuing to use Schoology this year as our learning management system here at TJ to support your child’s learning.  All of your student’s teachers will be using this to house important course information.  You can log-in to this platform using your same credentials as your SIS Parent VUE account.

If you need assistance with creating a SIS Parent Vue account, please use this link.

For more information about Schoology, please use this link.

More information regarding using Schoology for parents and guardians new to the platform can be found here.

In early September, our school will be hosting three optional half-hour virtual sessions to learn more about how to access and navigate Schoology.  Each session will cover the same information.  The dates, times, and Zoom registration links are below.  We will also make a recording available if you are unable to attend.  If you have any questions you would like to make sure we cover, please share them in advance of our meetings using this form.  We look forward to continuing to partner together in support of your student’s learning.

Parent/Guardian Volunteers Needed for Monday JLC Time

TJ Parents and Guardians,

JLC (Jefferson Learning Community) is a dedicated time embedded in the school day for teachers and administrators to have meaningful conversations and develop plans to address our instructional needs. We appreciate the continued support that parents have given us in the past and look forward to new parent/guardian volunteers.

As your schedule allows, we ask that you consider supporting us by volunteering to monitor students from 12:10pm to 12:50pm on Mondays while instructional teams are meeting. This hour of time affords you with a glimpse of the TJ community and daily student life. If you are interested, please complete this form. Parents must also complete all background check procedures through Fairfax County Public Schools.  JLC sessions this Fall include: 9/12, 9/19, 10/ 11 (Tuesday), 10/17, 11 /7, 11/28, and 12/12.  If you have additional questions, please contact Margaret Wilson at mkwilson@fcps.edu.

Monday, August 29 is a Red Day

This coming Monday, August 29, will be a Red Day, periods 5, 6, 7, and advisory will be held. The reason for this is there is no school on Friday, Sept. 2 as we begin the four-day Labor Day weekend holiday.
