Revised Proposals for Transitway Operations and Crystal Drive Lane Configuration

County staff held a community meeting on Oct. 8 to provide an update on Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway construction and proposed operations and plans to restripe Crystal Drive between 15th and 23rd Streets. Read the meeting presentation.

• The revised plan for Crystal Drive includes converting one of the southbound lanes into a center two-way turn lane, allowing both north and southbound traffic to use it for left turns; adding a northbound bike lane; and converting some parking spots on the west side of Crystal Drive to morning loading/delivery zones.
• The revised proposal for Transitway operations changes the hours of the peak period bus-only lane on Crystal Drive and Clark/Bell Street from 10 hours per day to 6.5 hours per day (6 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 7 p.m.).

Repaving of Crystal Drive Starts This Weekend

Before the Transitway opens, the County is repaving Crystal Drive between 15th and 26th Streets. The paving starts this weekend and will last for several weeks.

Some milling and paving operations will be performed at night, between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., to reduce the impact on traffic, and lanes will be closed to traffic during this work. The repaving will begin at 15th Street and then head south toward 26th Street.

Construction Updates

Crystal City Multimodal Center

This week construction activities concentrated on demolishing the existing asphalt pavement in and around the intersection of 18th Street and South Bell Street. By the end of the week our contractor had begun grading for the subgrade layer. Next week they will continue to prepare the subgrade and start installing material for the subbase layer.

Detours/Lane Closures 

The following lane closures are due to construction for the Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway and Crystal City Multimodal Center.

Crystal Drive: 

• Between 20th and 23rd Streets - Northbound right lane closed. Access to driveways remains open. 
• From U.S. Route 1 up to 26th Street South - Parking and right lanes closed.

18th Street South:

• Inside lanes on each side of the street are closed between South Eads and Bell Streets. No on-street parking or charter bus parking available in this area.
• Bike lane closed under Route 1 bridge.

South Clark/Bell Streets:

• Traffic at 18th Street intersection limited to right turns only.
• Right lane closed between 20th and 23rd Streets, and between 23rd and 26th Streets.

Route 1: Northbound right turn lane closed between South Glebe Road and Crystal Drive.
