A research workforce that reflects the diversity of America is a
critical step in reducing health disparities. More still needs to be done to
understand how to better engage minorities in research careers. The National
Institutes of Health announced nearly $31 million in funds for workforce
development approaches that engage researchers, including those from
backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical sciences. These
awards will support a national consortium of organizations working to encourage
individuals to start and stay in biomedical research careers. Read the press release.
A
new curriculum aims to empower high school students as advocates and promoters
of better health in their communities. Project SHARE, made possible
by a grant from the National Library of Medicine, is a
collaboration between the University of Maryland Health Science and Human Services Library and Baltimore’s Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy. The
free curriculum includes lesson plans, assignments and experiential learning
activities related to understanding health disparities and health and wellness
promotion. Download the Project SHARE curriculum.
