NLRB and Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sign Memorandum of Understanding

WASHINGTON, DC—The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Colombia signed a memorandum of understanding designed to promote awareness among Colombian workers, their employers, and business owners of their rights and responsibilities under the National Labor Relations Act (Act). The Act covers most private sector workers and business owners in the United States regardless of immigration status. To date, the Agency has entered into three other such formal agreements with foreign ministries aimed at providing education, outreach, and training to foreign workers, their employers, and business owners residing in the U.S.

The framework announced today lays the groundwork for collaboration between the NLRB and the Colombian Ministry in DC as well as consulates across the country to improve awareness within the Colombian community working in the U.S. Specifically, the memorandum outlines that the parties will coordinate to develop resources and local plans to provide training and outreach nationwide.

The NLRB is the independent government agency responsible for enforcing the National Labor Relations Act, the primary law governing relations between employers and employees in the private sector. The Act guarantees workers the right to join together, with or without a union, to improve their wages and working conditions, or to refrain from such activities. Employers and employees alike are protected from unfair labor practices.
