It’s American Heart Month: If You Have Diabetes, Take Care of Your Heart By Managing Your Diabetes ABCs
For people with diabetes, heart disease can be a serious health problem. Many people do not know that having diabetes means that you have a greater chance of having heart problems such as a heart attack or stroke. Visit YourDiabetesInfo.org/Heart to learn how to manage your diabetes ABCs and take care of your heart. Prediabetes is also a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Find out how you can prevent type 2 diabetes and more about the National Diabetes Prevention Program.

February is Black History Month!
In observance of Black History Month, we remind partners that African Americans are disproportionately affected by type 2 diabetes. The NDEP has resources you can use to talk about diabetes and family health history, as well as the NDEP’s Choose More Than 50 Ways to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes tip sheet and New Beginnings: A Discussion Guide for Living Well with Diabetes on-line resource.

NDEP Call for Nominations: Diabetes HealthSense Task Group
The NDEP is seeking experienced volunteers to guide content review, maintenance, expansion, and promotion of NDEP’s Diabetes HealthSense, a web resource designed to provide easy access to useful tools and programs to help with behavior change for people with or at risk for diabetes and those who care for them. Please view the NDEP Diabetes HealthSense Task Group call for nominations to learn more about this group and to submit a nomination or self-nomination.

New! NDEP’s Guiding Principles for the Care of People With or at Risk for Diabetes
The NDEP has published a set of 10 clinically useful principles that highlight areas of agreement for diabetes care in diabetes management and prevention. This online resource is intended to assist with identification and management of the disease, self-management support for patients, physical activity, and blood glucose control, among other topics. NDEP’s February Partner Spotlight features the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Waukesha County for using NDEP resources in Healthy Living with Diabetes workshops.

Coming Soon: Diabetes Alert Day 2014
American Diabetes Association Alert Day® is Tuesday, March 24, 2015. On Diabetes Alert Day and throughout the month of March, the NDEP will support the American Diabetes Association by encouraging people to find out if they are at risk for type 2 diabetes. Stay tuned for more information from the NDEP to help you promote Diabetes Alert Day in your community.
