Bionic pancreas outperforms insulin pump in
adults, youth
People with type 1 diabetes who
used a bionic pancreas instead of manually monitoring glucose using fingerstick
tests and delivering insulin using a pump were more likely to have blood
glucose levels consistently within the normal range, with fewer dangerous lows
or highs. The full report of the small-scale trials of the bionic pancreas, funded by the National Institutes of
Health, can be found online June 15 in the New
England Journal of Medicine.

Enjoy a healthy summer with these tips
Are you a parent or other
caregiver trying to help your kids stay healthy during the summer? Here are
some ideas:
-
Eat breakfast every morning to charge up your family.
-
Limit screen time
on TV, computers, and hand-held devices. Take play outdoors. Jump rope or play
hopscotch or kickball.
-
Make sure your kids drink fluids to stay hydrated.
Choose water or nonfat or low-fat milk instead of soda or sports drinks
Here are summer health tips
for adults:
-
Start a small garden in your yard or a community patch to exercise, grow healthy food, and
have fun with family and neighbors.
-
When the sidewalks sizzle, get moving indoors with a fun fitness video or DVD.
-
Choose water workouts and make a splash as you get fit and strong.
