February
is American Heart Month
Promote
heart health with these resources
According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
heart disease is the top cause of death in the United States. People can make
changes in their lives—including healthier eating and more physical
activity—that may lower some of the risk factors for heart disease, like high
blood pressure and high LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol). If you would like
to spread the word about heart health, these resources may help:
-
Healthfinder.gov’s American Heart Month Toolkit. This
toolkit features an overview of heart disease and ways to prevent it. Use its
newsletter content, Twitter updates, and other tools to promote heart health where
you live or work. http://healthfinder.gov/NHO/FebruaryToolkit.aspx
-
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s American
Heart Month Webpage. This page lays out the basics of heart disease, suggests
steps to prevent it, and offers links for more information. http://www.cdc.gov/features/heartmonth
-
The Heart Truth, a program of the National Institutes of
Health (NIH). Sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, this
campaign aims to raise women’s awareness of heart disease and ways to prevent
it. Visit The Heart Truth’s website for tips on preventing heart disease and
tools you can use to get the word out. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/educational/hearttruth

Get active this month with a friend
Is
it hard to get moving? Does working out seem boring or like a chore? Make it
social. Involve your family and friends in physical activity to have fun, spend
quality time together, and stay on track. Here are some ideas:
|
- Meet a friend for workouts or to train together for a
charity event. Join a class or sports league where people count on you to show up.
- No matter what age your kids are, find an activity you can do
together. Dance to music, take a walk, run around the park, or play basketball
or soccer.
Find
more ideas for moving more and building habits of physical activity in WIN’s Tips
to Help You Get Active. This recently updated brochure includes tools to help
you pinpoint and overcome roadblocks to being more physically active. It also
has tools you can use to track your progress and ideas for staying safe while
being active. View and download a copy at http://1.usa.gov/1aYmtTm,
or contact WIN at 1–877–946–4627 to order printed copies.
