NDEP Can Support Your National Diabetes Month Outreach Efforts
November is National Diabetes Month! The NDEP and its partners want people to know that Diabetes is a Family Affair. Find information and resources that you can use to spread the word at www.YourDiabetesInfo.org/DiabetesMonth2013

November is American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month
Diabetes is more common in American Indians and Alaska Natives, but science has proven that people can prevent type 2 diabetes. This November, share these 7 powerful steps to help American Indians and Alaska Natives at risk for type 2 diabetes move more and eat less to lower their risk for diabetes. You can also use NDEP’s Living a Balanced Life with Diabetes: A Toolkit Addressing Psychosocial Issues for American Indian and Alaska Native Peoples, designed to help health care professionals address psychosocial issues with this audience.

NDEP’s Practice Transformation Has Tools to Help You Engage Leadership and Assess Your Practice
The NDEP’s Practice Transformation resource is designed for health care professionals and administrators who want to change systems of health care delivery around diabetes. Check out the “Engage Leadership and Assess Your Practice” section to learn steps effective leaders can take to ensure the successful transformation of a practice into a patient-centered medical home (PCMH).

Volunteers Needed for Diabetes Prevention Study
The National Institutes of Health is seeking volunteers to take part in a study to compare different approaches to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes in high-risk individuals and to treat individuals who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the last 12 months. Adults are being studied by centers in Seattle, Indianapolis, Chicago and Los Angeles and children are being studied by centers in Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Denver and New Haven. More information about the RISE Study is available.

Diabetes & the Flu
It’s flu season, and people with diabetes are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year. Encourage everyone – especially those with diabetes – to get a flu shot. Find out about the other important vaccines that all adults with diabetes need.

Exploring Diabetes HealthSense
The NDEP’s Diabetes HealthSense online tool provides resources to support people in making changes to live well – whether they have diabetes or not.  Find resources such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s www.ChooseMyPlate.gov, which provides information about the building blocks for a healthy diet. If you have a behavior change resource that you think can enhance Diabetes HealthSense, please share it with NDEP by completing this submission form.
