October is Health Literacy Month
Having limited health literacy skills can be a problem for people with
chronic diseases, such as diabetes. Health-related terms and concepts can be
hard to understand. Learn more about NDEP’s plain language publications and the
process NDEP uses to incorporate plain language principles for health literacy
and numeracy here.
New Study Finds More than Half of Asian Americans with Diabetes are Undiagnosed
More than half of
Asian Americans and nearly half of Hispanic Americans with diabetes are
undiagnosed, according to researchers from the NIH and CDC and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Additionally, prevalence of diabetes for all American adults went up, from
nearly 10 percent to over 12 percent between 1988 and 2012. Principle 1: Identify People With
Undiagnosed Diabetes and Prediabetes in NDEP’s Guiding Principles outlines
how to detect individuals with diabetes and prediabetes to facilitate appropriate
early interventions.
Life Style Intervention or Metformin Reduce Diabetes Development
The NIH-funded Diabetes
Prevention Program Outcomes Study shows lifestyle intervention or
metformin significantly reduced diabetes development over 15 years. This result
supports the importance of diabetes prevention.

Diabetes & the Flu
It’s flu shot season and the NDEP reminds you
