Gunpowder Exercise Prepares Future Medics for the Battlefield

After a terrorist attack, the smoke clears and two soldiers lay on the cold concrete floor with gaping wounds, their lives hanging in the balance. As Army 2nd Lt. Taylor Mansfield joins a team of medics coming to the aid of these fallen comrades, the group comes under attack again and the wounded must be dragged to safety.

“You’re going to be OK,” Mansfield, a native of Decorah, Iowa, assures one of the stricken, as he works to stop the bleeding and gather what information he can from his patient. But she still screams in pain and begs for help. He’s doing all he can, but she continues to cry out. He puts a hand on her face and tells her again, “You’re going to be OK.”

April marks Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and I take this issue very seriously. That means I have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to sexual assault and I expect the same from everyone – Sailor or Civilian – throughout the entire Navy Medicine enterprise.
