Fulfilling Patient Needs is Top Priority for Military Brain Injury Center’s Deputy Director

Care and prevention for traumatic brain injuries (TBI) have come a long way since Kathy Helmick began her career more than 20 years ago as a nurse practitioner. She’s gone from being a caregiver to her current role as the deputy director for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC), the Military Health System’s component to serve active duty military, their beneficiaries, and veterans with TBI. During that time, what’s given her the greatest fulfillment is being able to work with service partners to support quality care for TBI patients that represents the best today’s science offers.

Concussions and Sleep Disorders Closely Linked

New research shows a close link between concussions and sleep disorders. A recent study by the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC) shows that sleep disturbances are common after a person sustains a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), commonly known as a concussion.
