LHD 8 Medical Department hosts first medical student

USS Makin Island (LHD 8) is hosting its first medical student from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland.

The LHD amphibious assault ship’s medical department already boasts the largest and most capable medical facility in the fleet, aside from the hospital ships USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) and USNS Comfort (T-AH 20), making this interaction another step in allowing Navy Medicine to train personnel in different environments.

DHHQ cycling team founder uses 'Positive Motion' to encourage others

Four years ago, Army Lt. Col. Joy Schmalzle, an optometry staff officer with the Army Office of the Surgeon General located at Defense Health Headquarters (DHHQ), was about to turn 40. In her words, she ‘was getting old’ and decided to test herself by entering a triathlon. Schmalzle bought a bike, began training and discovered how much she enjoyed riding.
