Defining Success in International Business

Ken Hyatt is the Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade.

In international trade, success comes in many forms.

It could be the key introduction to a business partner, leading to a company’s first sales in the Middle East, as it was for Virginia-based MV Global.

It could be the key networking connections made on a state trade mission, as it was for Kentucky’s Interapt.

Last week, I was pleased to join Secretary Pritzker to honor 65 other unique success stories during the President’s E Award Ceremony, recognizing the top companies and organizations supporting U.S. exports. The awardees included some great stories:

  • IMS Dredges has seen international sales comprise more than half of their total sales in the last four years;
  • Cleveland’s Vitamix has taken its old-fashioned product demonstrations global, seeing its international sales increase 218 percent in four years, and;
  • The Mobile, Ala. Chamber of Commerce has connected area businesses to global opportunities, helping the state nearly set an export record in 2013.

One key ingredient to success is data, and the Department of Commerce has a lot of that. We’ll be highlighting it throughout June, from the data NOAA provides to help America’s ports cut transportation costs, to our travel data that is informing Maine’s tourism strategy.

Make sure to follow ITA on Twitter to learn about more ways we and the larger Department of Commerce team use data to support U.S. businesses.

And be sure to follow the discussion around our Discover Forum in Los Angeles (#DGMLosAngeles) to learn about how we’re supporting American companies doing business in Europe. There are five more Discover Forums this year, so find the one right for your business and let us help you tap into the global marketplace!

Thanks to all of you for your support of international trade!
