On
Wednesday, Sept. 9, President Obama, Dr. Jill Biden and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan were
on the road promoting America’s
College Promise —the president’s initiative to
make community college free for all responsible students. They also announced
the Department of Labor’s $175 million American Apprenticeship Grant
Program,
which will provide awards to public-private business partnerships. These grants
will be used to train and hire more than 34,000 new apprentices in high-growth
and high-tech industries as diverse as health care, information technology, and
advanced manufacturing over the next five years.
The president also announced the appointment of the advisory
board to America’s College Promise, the launch of the Heads Up America campaign to raise
awareness about the importance of community colleges, and the release of a White
House report on the nation’s progress toward free community college for
responsible students, America’s College Promise: A Progress Report
