BTS Releases July Airline On-Time/Tarmac Data

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics today released July airline on-time and tarmac numbers.  Here is a summary of tables posted on the BTS website

Tarmac times

 

The tables posted on the BTS website are:

 

Table 1: On-time arrival performance during the first seven months of 2014 (74.39) was the sixth lowest for the January-July period in the 20 years with comparable numbers, exceeding January-July 2007, 2000, 2008, 1999 and 1996. The cancellation rate for the seven-month period (2.87) was the third highest in the 20 years with comparable numbers, exceeded by January-July 2000 and 1999. Note that the number of reporting carriers has varied. 

 

Table 2: July, with 75.61 percent of flights arriving on time, was the 167th highest month of the 235 months with comparable records. On-time performance in July 2014 was the 13th highest for any July and almost equal to the average of 75.67 for July in the previous 19 years. The cancellation rate of 1.61 percent in July 2014 was the sixth lowest for any July, below the July average of 1.84 percent in the previous 19 years and the 100th lowest of the 235 months with comparable records. 

 

Table 3: Salt Lake City (86.04) had the highest and New York JFK (67.66) had the lowest on-time arrival performance of the 29 busiest airports in July.  

 

Table 4: Salt Lake City (84.68) had the highest and Chicago O’Hare (66.17) had the lowest on-time arrival performance of the 29 busiest airports for the seven-month January-July period.

 

Table 5: Salt Lake City (86.73) had the highest and Chicago Midway (65.78) had the lowest on-time departure performance of the 29 busiest airports in July.

 

Table 6: Salt Lake City (85.97) had the highest and Chicago Midway (61.15) had the lowest on-time departure performance of the 29 busiest airports for seven-month January-July period.

 

Tarmac Times:  In July, there were two domestic flights with tarmac time of more than three hours. The longest was Spirit Airlines Flight 667 from BWI to DFW on July 17 which was on the Houston Bush Intercontinental tarmac for 218 minutes after being diverted. The flight continued to its destination.

 

There were no international flights with tarmac time of more than four hours.

 

Chronically Delayed:

4 consecutive months:  None.

 

3 consecutive months:  Three Southwest flights were more than 30 minutes late or canceled more than 50 percent of the time in May, June and July.         

 

2 consecutive months: In addition to the flights delayed for three consecutive months, 105 Southwest flights, six ExpressJet flights, five Frontier flights, five SkyWest flights, two Envoy flights, two United flights, one AirTran flight and one JetBlue flight were more than 30 minutes late or canceled more than 50 percent of the time in both June and July.

 

1-month: In July, 375 flights were more than 30 minutes late or canceled more than 50 percent of the time. The most delayed flight was Southwest flight 1109 from LAX to SFO which was 30 minutes late or canceled 85.2 percent of the time. The flight operated 27 times during the month, averaging 103 minutes late.
