CSAF reading list titles available through online Air Force library

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas – General Ronald Fogleman created the chief of staff of the Air Force Professional Reading Program in 1996 to develop a common frame of reference among Air Force members to help them become better, more effective advocates of air and space power.

 

Earlier this year, Chief of Staff of the Air Force Mark A. Welsh III released the CSAF 2014 Reading List with the hopes it would encourage Airmen to tell their own story.

 

“This year’s CSAF reading list was designed to build understanding,” Welsh said in a message to Airmen. “There are stories of Airmen, fellow service members and leaders from many different backgrounds. I bet there’s a book, a movie, a piece of artwork, or a TED talk in there that you can relate to. I encourage you to try and find your own story in one of these selections.”

 

The 2014 reading list contains 12 books, seven films, seven TED talks, web-based resources, artwork and photography selections. Welsh selected nine titles on this list and Chief Master Sgt. James A. Cody selected three titles.

 

“Every day is an opportunity to tell our Air Force story; books offer the knowledge to help appreciate and at times better understand these stories,” said Cody in a message to Airmen. “These three books provide new perspectives. They offer new ideas on how we can connect and communicate to reach personal and professional goals.”

 

The CSAF reading list titles have been purchased for all Air Force libraries, and titles published in digital format are available electronically through the Air Force Library’s OverDrive program.

 

OverDrive offers resources such as electronic books, audio books, digital magazines, movies and much more.

 

To access the online Air Force library, visit the Air Force Portal and click on the resources tab in the navigation tool bar. Once on the resource page, scroll down to OverDrive and click on the hyperlink. Members who do not have an account will have to create one at this point. Also, visit your local installation library for assistance in setting up an account for OverDrive and other digital media services.

 

“OverDrive is very similar to an Air Force base library online catalog,” explained Marjorie Buchanan, Air Force Personnel Center libraries branch chief. “OverDrive allows Airmen to borrow most titles up to 14 days. Airmen can use the OverDrive application to access the Air Force collection on the go. This collection is tailored to the Air Force community by providing current and past reading lists as well as recommended best sellers from the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.”
