Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, thank nurses during their Christmas Day visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., Dec. 25, 2013. The Bidens visited with patients and their families to thank them for their service to and sacrifice for the nation.

The guided-missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy displays holiday lights pierside during the annual Pearl Harbor Festival of Lights in Pearl Harbor, Dec. 17, 2013. The guided missile destroyer was named after Lt. Michael Murphy, a Navy seal and Medal of Honor recipient, who was killed in action in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan in June 2005.
