Commerce Week at a Glance: Commercial Diplomat of the Year
We
have very exciting news this week. Secretary Penny Pritzker received the first
ever Commercial Diplomat of the Year Award from Foreign Policy Magazine. This
honor recognizes a leader in business or government who effectively promotes
their nation’s interest globally via commercial and economic diplomacy.
Secretary Pritzker noted that the award reflects the hard work and dedication
of our entire Commerce Team, without whom we would not be able to carry out the
Department’s mission every day.
Also
this week, Secretary Pritzker spoke at the Center for American Progress where
she discussed the choices needed to create a path forward for long term value
and prosperity to our economy. She also spoke at the Investing in Manufacturing
Communities Partnership (IMCP) Summit, highlighting the key role American
communities are playing in the resurgence of U.S. manufacturing. Next week,
Secretary Pritzker will travel to Germany and Ukraine as a continuation of the
Obama Administration’s sustained commitment to supporting and expanding
commercial diplomacy.
Around
the Department: MBDA participated in Minority Enterprise Development Week; NOAA
launched the FishWatch mobile website; Census celebrated World Statistics Day;
and NOAA discussed 2015 being the warmest year on record in a recent New York
Times blog post.
I
hope you have a great weekend, and let’s continue to keep America Open for
Business.
All
the best,

World
Statistics Day 2015: Better Data. Better Lives.- The United Nations General
Assembly designated October 20, 2015 as the second-ever World Statistics Day to
highlight the many achievements of national statistical systems across the
globe. The U.S. government has a long history of collecting data about the
nation’s people, places and economy – beginning with the first census in 1790.
Today, the Census Bureau and other federal statistical agencies publish the
statistics the nation uses to record progress and plan for the future.
USA
Trade Online is Now FREE!- The newly redesigned USA Trade Online is now free

Bureau Opens 20th Research Data Center in Wisconsin- As we celebrate World

qualified researchers on approved projects access to restricted data that are
vital to increasing our understanding of the U.S. population and economy.
Statisticians:
A Goodness of Fit Test- In honor of World Statistics Day, let’s talk about
statisticians. While lots of people use statistics in their jobs every day,
such as sports writers, stock analysts, weather reporters, biologists,
engineers, economists, sociologists, epidemiologists, practicing physicians, nuclear
physicists and lots more, only 45,145 or so (standard deviation 2,150) describe
themselves as “statisticians” on the American Community Survey.

What
Comes After Teaching Leadership?- Business schools today
have placed a renewed emphasis on teaching leadership. Dawn Bailey explored
this topic in a recent
Blogrige post. As Dawn stated, one of the
principles behind this shift is to cause a deep dive into values. And
values-centered leadership is, in my opinion, a critical attribute of
successful leadership.
