Now Available! Home and Business Earthquake Safety and Mitigation (FEMA P-909CD)

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is pleased to announce that the Home and Business Earthquake Safety and Mitigation (FEMA P-909CD) is now available from the FEMA Publications Warehouse. This new training program on structural and non-structural earthquake mitigation has three components: a Train-the-Trainer course, a Home and Business Earthquake Safety and Mitigation course, and a Hands-On Interactive Mitigation Demonstration. On successful completion of the Train-the-Trainer course offered through the FEMA National Earthquake Technical Assistance Program (NETAP), students will be certified to train others and can request sufficient quantities of the CDs from the FEMA Warehouse for their classes (see the NETAP Training Calendar for more information).

  • Train-the-Trainer Course: This 75-minute course trains students to organize, plan, recruit, and deliver the Home and Business Earthquake Safety and Mitigation course (see below). Students also learn about the Home and Business Earthquake Safety and Mitigation course by taking the class. A quiz tests knowledge of the material.
  • Home and Business Earthquake Safety and Mitigation Course: This course is designed to be delivered to non-technical audiences by those who have successfully completed the Train-the-Trainer course (see above). The goal is for students to gain the basic knowledge needed to take simple steps toward earthquake safety and mitigation in their homes and businesses. This training may be delivered as a 45-minute educational course that concludes with a hands-on demonstration (see below) in which mitigation techniques are taught to students. An alternative format allows for the demonstration element to be removed and presented visually with PowerPoint Slides.
  • Hands-On Interactive Mitigation Demonstration: The course is a stand-alone, 15-20 minute interactive, hands-on, and visually engaging presentation for small groups. This course design is similar to workshops offered by big box stores, retailers, earthquake preparedness expos, and other emergency management community efforts for home and business owners. Instructions for the demonstration model are included in the CD provided to students on completion of the course.

Audiences for the FEMA P-909 training program include emergency managers, first responders, volunteer community groups, and others interested in leading an earthquake safety presentation. Students should be familiar with the need for earthquake preparedness. Experience leading presentations on the subject is not required.
