Dear National Service Colleagues and Communicators,

National Volunteer Week is an ideal moment to reflect on the power of citizen engagement -- across all age groups and in every corner of the country.

Whether you’re marking Global Youth Service Day or driving hundreds of miles to support others (like this week’s featured Senior Corps volunteer), please accept our thanks, and share the inspiring stories below.

Thanks and have a great weekend.

Ted Miller
Chief of External Affairs
Corporation for National and Community Service

P.S. – We’re thrilled with the excitement and interest we've seen in the Social Innovation Fund's 2014 Notice of Funding Availability. The application deadline, April 22, is fast approaching!

Encouraging Youth To Serve: CEO Wendy Spencer spoke today at the Clinton Presidential Center and served with 200 Little Rock area high school students at the Arkansas Food Bank as part of Global Youth Service Day -- the only day of service dedicated exclusively to engaging children and youth.  During her visit, Wendy met with AmeriCorps members, AmeriCorps alums, youth leaders, and students and explained how service is a valuable tool for self-empowerment.

Driving Miles and Miles: Senior Corps volunteers who serve with our Foster Grandparents, RSVP, and Senior Companions programs make a real difference to individuals, nonprofits, and community organizations throughout the country. Senior Companion Donna Lamp is one of them: She has devoted more than 388 hours and driven more than 3,000 miles to help elderly residents in her community.

Celebrating The Environment: As the year-long celebration of the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps continues, we have designated April as Environmental Stewardship Month!  Check out our latest toolkit with key dates and messages. Also, be sure to follow our “20 Ways AmeriCorps Helps the Earth” blog series on Tumblr and join the conversation.

Supporting Our Communities: National service participants provide critical support to millions of Americans who are affected by disasters. Over the past two weeks, AmeriCorps members serving with the Washington Conservation Corps have joined the response to the Oso landslide in Washington.
