Dear Colleagues and Communicators,

Whether they're spearheading the development of nonprofits, helping to build new homes, or cleaning public lands and waterways, our national service participants are tackling big challenges across the country.

This week's updates highlight both the diversity of their work and the ways in which we honor their contributions. We are especially thrilled to announce huge participation in the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service. Read on below for more!

Thanks and have a great weekend,

The External Affairs Team

Recognizing the Contributions of National Service: More than 1,500 mayors across the country have signed up for next week's Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service. Are you ready to join them in thanking AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers for their commitment to service? Millennials Sparking Change Through Entrepreneurship and Service: As they engage teams of volunteers, manage multiple projects, and build leadership skills, AmeriCorps members serve in ways that promote healthy communities and provide pathways to opportunity for more Americans. During a keynote address and a discussion with Ron Brownstein of the National Journal on Tuesday, CEO Wendy Spencer explained how our members use the skills they learn in AmeriCorps to launch their own businesses, projects, and initiatives. (You can watch Wendy's remarks at the 10:40 mark; the discussion begins around 27:15.)

Building Stronger Schools: Senior Corps volunteers in our Foster Grandparents, RSVP, and Senior Companions programs serve as mentors, coaches, tutors, and advocates for many Americans. Don Dauwen, 75, works four days a week at the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, where he helps kids in need.

Promoting Environmental Stewardship: Every day, our national service members help improve ecosystems, support conservation activities, and increase energy and water efficiency. As part of our yearlong celebration of the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps, we will use the month of April to highlight the important contributions that our members make to protecting and improving the environment.
