Dear National Service Community,
As you are undoubtedly aware, the impact of the mudslides on
the community of Oso, Washington, has been astonishing. And, as expected, the outpouring
of support and compassion from communities across the country has been even
greater. When an event this devastating occurs, Americans want to offer hope
and healing.
On behalf of the national service family, I ask you keep in
mind that the arrival of unexpected volunteers may interfere with the initial
response and lifesaving efforts. You could unsuspectingly place yourself or
others at great risk.
At this time, the most effective way you can assist relief
efforts is by making cash contributions to humanitarian organizations that are
conducting relief operations. This will ensure a well-coordinated and well-resourced
response. Recovery from an event such as
this will be a slow and gradual process. Volunteers will be needed most in the
coming months as the recovery and cleanup continues.
National service members stand ready to deploy when
these events occur, and we know we can count on you to stand with us. Members of FEMA Corps, a unit of AmeriCorps NCCC, are positioned within the state
assisting with data assessments, and the AmeriCorps Washington Conservation
Corps is poised to assist with rebuilding, sheltering, and other needs as they
arise.

Thank you for your continued commitment to serving those in
need.
